Nutsa Gogoberidze's first solo directorial effort, rediscovered just a few years ago in a Russian archive after a long search by her daughter Lana Gogoberidze and granddaughter Salomé Alexi. A force of nature – a glacier located at an altitude of over 4,000 metres – gave this film its title: BUBA, a "cultural film" from 1930.
"People have been fighting for survival for centuries in the high mountain region of Racha. As soon as the meagre harvest is brought in, the men descend into the valley, leaving women and children behind for months at the mercy of dangerous nature. In her poetic documentary, Nutsa Gogoberidze overlaps the patriarchal order with images of a bright, technological future, rhythmized by a dynamic montage and impressive shots of nature's awe-inspiring force." It is springtime. After class, Zura, Khatuna, Leqso and Eka, a teenage clique, like to drive to the seaside in a "borrowed" car or revel in the hustle and bustle of the boulevards of Tbilisi. At the centre of the group's attention stands Zura, a talented competitive cyclist and son of a successful and domineering father. Alas, behind the youthful light-heartedness and sense of imminent transformation and growth, something is brewing: Zura, endearing but irresponsible, can count on his dad to bail him out of trouble no matter what he does – that is, until a terrible accident occurs and Khatuna insists on holding him accountable. This film, shot in CinemaScope, entertains with impressive shots of cycling races and testifies to Gogoberidze's great fascination for sports. Giya Kancheli's score is energetic and brimming with fitting impatience. "And so, the youth films of the 1960s became the 'cinema of moral unrest' of the following decade", as Evgeny Margolit commented on this wonderfully nuanced film. (Gaby Babić)

BUBA is accompanied on the piano by Maud Nelissen.
Maud Nelissen is a Dutch composer and pianist who has particularly dedicated herself to the creation of musical accompaniment for silent films. She worked in Italy with Charlie Chaplin’s last music arranger Eric James. Since then she has been much in demand by festivals and special events in Europe, America and Asia. She founded her own ensemble, The Sprockets, for silent film accompaniment, and performs with them or with various other ensembles and orchestras in Holland and abroad. Maud has collaborated intensively with The Kinothek Asta Nielsen in the past and has composed for the last 3 editions of the Remake Festival the music for Hindle Wakes (1927, Maurice Elvey), Shoes (1916 Lois Weber) and The Nortull Gang (1923, Per Lindberg)
