We begin the festival with a programme of short films about celebrations and protests, factory scenes and street scenes, improvised mourning rituals, and applied history lessons. On the occasion of our little anniversary – the 5th Remake Festival – we invite you to explore the generational theme across several decades right from the start: films from exactly 100 years of women's film history negotiate continuities, breaks, life paths – Where we come from, where we’re going.
We begin with two very short newsreels. Paris, 1925: FÊTE DE SAINTE CATHERINE, the feast of Saint Catherine, in honour of the patron saint of young women. The “Catherinettes” celebrate with extravagant hats, dresses, and costumes. They parade through the streets in groups, attend balls, and attract the attention of onlookers.
The snapshot of a group of suffragettes in LE VOTE DES FEMMES contrasts with the FÊTE. The mood is much more solemn, with protest signs calling for the protection of families, mothers, and children.
Around 1,000 women work at the LŐRINC SPINNERY in Hungary. Some live in dormitories; others, including Anna, Erzsébet, and the married Mrs. János, live with their families. Márta Mészáros follows their individual rhythms of eating, working, and sometimes a bit of amusement. Portraits of three very different women, framed by their mechanical occupation.
African-American artist and filmmaker Camille Billops tells a young boy about his ancestors. TAKE YOUR BAGS, a refrain of dispossession, describes how slaves were robbed of their history and culture. Though subsequent generations encounter the stolen goods in the great museums, they are once again denied access to them.
Anna Thew took her Bauer Super 8 camera with her on her trip to the Women's Film Festival in Minsk in 1995. In two days, she filmed more than 200 women on the streets and in the parks of the city. MINSK GIRL is a portrait film with pop music and Belarusian language exercises as its soundtrack.
Remake 5 will also celebrate the three generations of Georgian women filmmakers in the Gogoberidze family, which includes Salomé Alexi. Her mother Lana Gogoberidze's latest film will be screened on the second day of the festival, and her grandmother Nutsa's Soviet Georgian silent film will be shown as a matinee on the Sunday of the festival. In Alexi's short film FELICITÀ, Tamara, the family breadwinner, laments her husband's death via mobile phone and amplifier as he lies in state. The bizarre mourning ritual increasingly turns accusatory: while the unemployed village men complain about the lack of female care work, the women are the ones earning money – as care workers in the distant West.
At the end of the programme, a music video: In K-BOB STAR, Hansol Kim transforms her grandmother into a pop icon, fusing female care work with references to Cardi B. and multigenerational performance. (Gaby Babić)

Elvira Plenar studied classical music and jazz at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and is also a certified electronic music producer (SAE). Her musical language moves fluidly between composition and improvisation, structure and moment. In 1993, she was awarded the Jazz Prize of the State of Hesse. She works internationally as a pianist, composer and sound artist, combining music, theatre and visual arts in her projects to create vibrant soundscapes.
