GSSR 1930 | Director, Screenplay: Nutsa Gogoberidze | Camera: Sergei Zabozlayev | Music: Giorgi Tsintsadze | DCP | 39 min | silent | georgian and english INT | Manuel Cam
Nutsa Gogoberidze's first solo directorial effort, rediscovered just a few years ago in a Russian archive after a long search by her daughter Lana Gogoberidze and granddaughter Salomé Alexi. A force of nature – a glacier located at an altitude of over 4,000 metres – gave this film its title: BUBA, a "cultural film" from 1930.
"People have been fighting for survival for centuries in the high mountain region of Racha. As soon as the meagre harvest is brought in, the men descend into the valley, leaving women and children behind for months at the mercy of dangerous nature. In her poetic documentary, Nutsa Gogoberidze overlaps the patriarchal order with images of a bright, technological future, rhythmized by a dynamic montage and impressive shots of nature's awe-inspiring force."
