With Spoor, Agnieszka Holland delivers a wild genre mix: an anarcho-eco-feminist thriller featuring socio-utopian moments, an analysis of present-day Poland and filmic philosophizing about the destructive relation of man towards animals and nature. The screenplay is based on Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead. Retired bridge construction engineer and eccentric Janina Duszejko is an amateur astrologist, vegetarian, an expert on all things human and animal, who lives in a small town in the Sudetes and butts heads regularly and fiercely with the local backwoods good old boy crowd – including hunters, priests and sluggish cops practiced in the art of cronyism. When precisely these hunters start turning up dead in droves, Duszejko proposes the theory that wild animals are taking vengeance. weaves a wonderfully subversive whodunit with breath-taking images of nature, a lush soundtrack, biting humour and bizarre, endearing characters –  including a rich supporting cast of wild boars, deer, badgers, hedgehogs and insects.
