In Maurice Elvey‘s Hindle Wakes, factory worker Fanny Hawthorn (Estelle Brody) gets involved with Allan Jeffcote (John Stuart), son of the factory owner, during an annual holiday to the traditional seaside resort of Blackpool – the British counterpart to Coney Island. (…) When their families pressure them to marry, Fanny refuses and calls Allan her “little fancy”, taking the liberty of being sexually licentious beyond romance and marriage. Astonishment and horror on both sides. (…) the way she flips the lever on a machine to set the spindles rotating, in one of the last shots of the film, is more than a symbolic image. It crystallises her commitment to work and the decisive role she plays in it – as it does in her. In the same scene, she accepts the invitation of a factory colleague to go to the cinema, thus the world of work and the leisure culture of the New Woman come together in one image. Hindle Wakes is one of the few films that lets work triumph over marriage, romance and love, forming a bridge between the concerns of the first and second women’s movements regarding self-determination in professional life and sexuality (Annette Brauerhoch, City Girls – Frauenbilder im Stummfilm, 2007).

Young Fanny Hawthorn works in a cotton mill in Hindle, Lancashire, England. During the yearly company outing, she enjoys an affair with the son of the factory owner. From her family’s point of view, the only thing that can restore her honour is a wedding. But Fanny won’t give up her freedom just because of her “little fancy”. Sexual self-determination is – in the spirit of Emma Goldman – part of the pride of the working woman.

Maud Nelissen

Nelissen is a Dutch composer and pianist with a special interest in music for silent film. She worked in Italy with Charlie Chaplin's last music arranger, Eric James. She is now a much sought-after silent film pianist and composer at festivals in Europe, the USA and Asia.
Maud established her own silent film music ensemble, The Sprockets, and has performed with them as well as other ensembles at home and abroad. Maud Nelissen has collaborated with Kinothek Asta Nielsen many times in the past; for Remake 2021 and 2019 she composed the music for SHOES (1916, Lois Weber) and HINDLE WAKES (1927, Maurice Elvey). The composition for NORRTULLSLIGAN was also commissioned by the Kinothek.

Francesco Ferarrini

Francesco Ferarrini graduated at the conservatory of Rovigo in the class of Maestro Simoncini. From 1991 to 1996 he studied under Maestro Mario Brunello at Fondazione R. Romanini in Brescia. From 1984 to 1999 he perfected his studies under Maestro Franco Rossi. As First and Principal Cellist he worked with renowned ensembles and performed at the most important italian and international theatres and as a member of various orchestras. In 2003 he arranged the monday concerts at San Bernardino-Verona and founded chamber-ensemble "Interpreti Italiani". Ferrarini did records for labels such as BMG – Ricordi or EMI as well as for italian broadcasting. He teaches Cello at the conservatory of Trent and plays a violoncello (italian school) from 1700.

Daphne Balvers

Balvers studied saxophone at the Amsterdam Academy of Music . She is a member of the Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet and has worked in that city with internationally renowned musicians. She is also a member of Maud Nelissen's film music orchestra The Sprockets and teaches saxophone at the music school in Amersfoort.

Lucio Degani

Lucio Degani started studying the violin at the Udine Music Conservatory and finished his musical studies at the Florence Conservatory, achieving top marks. He perfected his studies with M° R. Zanettovich and attended the Chamber Music courses organized by Zanettovich, De Rosa and Farulli. He collaborated for several years with the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, the Orchestra of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna, The Orchestra Filarmonica and the Orchestra Sinfonica of Udine.He played as soloist under the direction of famous conductors (Bertini, Haag, Maazel, Muti, Nanut, Rostropovic, Scimone, Sinopoli, Thielemann etc).From 1986 until now he played as solo parts with the famous chamber orchestra “I Solisti Veneti” directed by the Maestro Claudio Scimone,and since 2000 he's the principal violin and soloist of that group playng in the most prestigious theatres and music halls around the world (Lincoln Center New York; Suntory Hall Tokyo; Musikverein Wien; Mozarteum Salzburg; Schauspielhaus Berlin; La Scala Milan; Opera and Salle Pleyel – Paris). His violin is a Girolamo Amati II of 1734.

Rombout Stoffers

Rombout Stoffers studied classical percussion at the Conservatoire of Amsterdam. He has worked for many orchestras e.g. the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He created and performed in many musical theatre productions with a variety of Dutch groups all over the World. Rombout has worked with Maud Nelissen for more then 20 years. Besides playing percussion he also sings and plays the accordion in many of her compositions for silent movies. With her and her film orchestra "The Sprockets" he travels all over Europe.
