“if passion between women and men is usually expressed on film by wild jumping around, the scene in 'lesbian mothers' shows tenderness and slowness”, is how Helke Sander describes the erotic sequences at the beginning and end of LESBIAN MOTHERS (Frauen und Film No. 4, 1975) in a critical review. The video work was shown at the Erstes Internationale Frauenfilmseminar (First International Women's Film Seminar), which was organised by Sander and Claudia von Alemann at the Arsenal cinema in 1973 and is considered the starting point of the feminist film movement in West Germany. LESBIAN MOTHERS was part of the video project Living in New York City, which Cinema Novo filmmaker Norma Pontes realised together with journalist Rita Moreira between 1972 and 1977. Brazilian film scholar Lívia Perez has dedicated herself to the archival processing of their work, and is at the same time also active in film production. In combination with the feature film A WILD PATIENCE HAS TAKEN ME HERE by Érica Sarmet, which she co-produced, the transgenerational work on the visibility of lesbian lives and relationships shines in new colours. Through talking heads and mobile phone recordings, the protagonists have their say and are seen, lending a documentary character to the dreamlike narrative with its resonant images.

feminist elsewheres is a group consisting of Arisa Purkpong, Sophie Holzberger, Charlotte Eitelbach, Fiona Berg and Elena Baumeister, which was founded in connection with the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Frauenfilmseminar to re-examine the event, and its update in 1997, from today's perspective.
