SHOWING UP is a tenderly humorous film that is grounded in fine observations about an artist community in Portland; it was shot on location at the Oregon College of Art and Craft shortly before it closed. The main character is introverted, sullen sculptor Lizzy (Michelle Williams ), who creates female figures out of clay (original art by Cynthia Lahti). With a local exhibition looming, Lizzy is pressed for time, and yet everything seems to be conspiring against her: the gruelling demands of her job in the art academy office; her dysfunctional family (Lizzy's mother is also her boss; her retired sculptor father harbours dubious, complicated old hippies); her successful artist colleague Jo, who is also Lizzy's neighbour and landlady but just can't find time to fix Lizzy's hot water; and a pigeon that has had an accident and needs looking after.
Kelly Reichardt tells us about space and time – the resources it takes to be able to follow your calling, and all the things that happen in the process – that just "show up". People and animals exist in relationships that oscillate between closeness, caregiving and isolation. (Gaby Babić, 2023)
